Dear Parents,
Hi and welcome to Grade Three. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, share with you my educational plans for the year and my classroom expectations. My name is Miss Heward and this is my fourth year teaching at Forest Green and my ninth year of teaching.
This year in Grade 3 we will be covering the topics of Rocks & Minerals, Hearing & Sound, Building with a Variety of Materials, Testing Materials & Designs and Animal Life Cycles in Science. Our Social Studies course will introduce the students to 4 different countries (Peru, Ukraine, Tunisia and India) around the world and Canada’s relationship with them. In Mathematics we will be working through the stands of Patterns & Relations, Number Operations, Shape & Space and Statistics & Probability. Our Language Arts course will be focused around Balanced Literacy and will encompass the expected learner outcomes for Language Arts. Along with our in class guided reading, students will be expected to participate in a home reading program. The home reading program should involve about 20 minutes of your child reading to you from their home reading books. Home Reading books are due on Mondays for checking. Another component to the Balanced Literacy Program is your child learning the spelling of new words from our grade levelled Word Wall. Spelling lists will be sent home on Mondays and students will be given a spelling test every Friday. Please have your child copy out lists and practice spelling at home.
Grade 3 is a year full of learning and new challenges for your child. The best way to keep your child prepared and active in their learning is to make sure your child is:
- Well rested
- Well fed (breakfast, nutritious snack, lunch, water bottle)
- Attends school regularly and on time.
- Engages in regular reading/spelling activities.
Please take the opportunity to ask your child questions regularly about their school day and discuss any work your child brings home with them. Please note any difficulties your child may be having and take many opportunities to praise them for their work completed.
As a form of positive communication between your home and the school we will be filling out agendas daily. These agendas will help us to establish two-way communication and will help keep all up to date on weekly reminders. Please read these agendas nightly and sign them. Your child will not be sent home with an agenda unsigned or stamped by me.
I am looking forward to the year ahead and thank you for the opportunity to teach your child. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about your child’s progress throughout the year.
Sincerely,
Erin Heward
